  • 06.29.2023 - Tampa Police Department (One on Ones - 5); A  call came in of a male subject shooting his firearm in a parking lot of a night club. TPD Air Service was conducting proactive patrol near the area and was able to spot the suspect vehicle fleeing the parking lot. Officers converged on the vehicle which was being driven by a female and occupied by the suspect in the front passenger seat. Officers conducted a felony traffic stop and the passenger jumped out of the front passenger seat and fired several rounds directly at the officers, striking an occupied patrol vehicle several times. Officers returned fire and struck the suspect. The suspect managed to re-enter the vehicle and the vehicle sped away. The vehicle was pursed by officers. The vehicle came to a stop when the female driver realized the suspect had sustained fatal wounds. The female driver was taken into custody and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured. In one of the patrol vehicles was a TPD college intern who had been riding with TPD officers for an entire semester. It should be noted that this incident occurred on the 13th year anniversary of the murder of two TPD officers, Jeff Kocab and David Curtis. The subject attempted to injure the Corporal by hitting, punching and finally choking him to the point he felt he would lose consciousness. The Corporal mentally determined he would have to shoot the subject, however he feared that if he activated the retention and pulled his firearm from the holster, then lost consciousness, the subject would have access to the firearm. The Corporal continued to struggle with the subject until help arrived. The clerk from the store assisted with pulling the subject off the Corporal as back p was arriving. The Corporal was transported to TGH with minor injuries and released back to full duty. The subject was subsequently charged with 1st degree attempted murder of a LEO. [#529]
